KOTA BARU: The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department is to explore the use of tube well technology in extinguishing fires in peatland areas which often occur during the drought season.

Its director-general Datuk Wan Mohd Nor Ibrahim said the use of tube wells could be used as one of the alternatives to supply water for extinguishing fires in peatlands.

"The construction of tube wells should be carefully planned and requires the cooperation from the Minerals and Geoscience Department to determine the strategic areas as the cost to build them is quite expensive, namely, about RM100,000," he said.

He said this after launching the Fire Safety Seminar 2016, which was also attended by Kelantan Fire and Rescue Department director Azmi Osman here today.

Wan Mohd Nor said forest fires were an annual phenomenon, especially during prolonged droughts.

"We will conduct further discussions with the Minerals and Geoscience Department to make tube wells as fire extinguishing agents," he said. — Bernama
