JAKARTA, July 13 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia will swap companies' lands in peatland territory with other productive areas, a move aiming at protecting and restoring the country's peatland and its ecosystem, an official said here on Thursday.

Secretary General of Environment and Forestry Ministry Bambang Hendroyono said over 900,000 hectares of productive lands located beyond peatland area have been prepared by the government for the land-swap plan.

The new lands would be given to firms which have submitted a plan of works to the ministry, Hendroyono said.

The lands are located in Sumatra Island, Borneo Island, Celebes Island, Nusa Tenggara, Maluku Island and Papua province, he added.

The Indonesian government has targeted to restore about 2 million hectares of peatland across the archipelagic nation by 2020 to address forest fire threat and preserve eco-system.

Sumatra Island in western parts of Indonesia and Boneo Island in central part of the country have frequently witnessed forest fires, particularly in peatland areas, sending thick haze to neighboring countries, apart from triggering huge economic losses.
