Title: Workshop On ASEAN Peatland Management Initiative, Bogor 16-17 Oct Country Report For Singapore
Date: 10-Nov-2003
Category: General

Singapore has limited forest land and peatlands and is not susceptible to large scale forest fires. It is however, affected by transboundary haze caused by forest land and peat fires in the region.

In order to handle the threat caused by impending smoke haze episodes, the Inter Ministry Haze Task Force (HTF) was established in 1994. The HTF is chaired by the Ministry of the Environment and comprises 21 ministries and government agencies. The HTF serves to ameliorate the impact of haze on the health and well-being of the general public in Singapore during the smoke haze period. It co-ordinates the overall approach and resources of the ministries and government agencies in addressing public concerns arising out of a deterioration in air quality. An Action Plan spelling out the health effects, cautionary statements and response plans based on the intensity of the haze has been developed.
