Date: 10-Nov-2003
Category: Vietnam

Vietnam has a total population of approx. 80 million with an annual growth rate at 1.3% and a total land area of approx. 331.700 km2. Vietnam is a coastal country having two main deltas: Red River Delta in the North and Mekong Delta in the South. Rice fields occupy most of the areas of the deltas. The country has a unique culture and the people are highly educated. The nation comprises of Viet (85%), Chinese (3%), Cham and other ethnic groups. Vietnam’s total GDP in 2002 was 28.6 billion USD and GDP per capita 400 USD. The economic innovation policy of Vietnam launched in the 80s brought about an average annual economic growth rate of 8% during the 1990-1997 period. The main products and industries of Vietnam are rice, rubber, food processing, textile, and chemical. Vietnam is a large trade partner of China, Singapore, Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. Three fourth of the population of the country are farmers whose GDP accounts for 40% of the country’s total. Eighty percent of the total agricultural production is rice. However, with the economic growth environmental problems and overexploitation of naturalresources, losses of biodiversity have also emerged. The overexploitation of land resources, especially peat land, hascaused serious consequences such as loss of biodiversity, forest fire that threaten the environment and human health. Therefore, Vietnam recognizes the need to have a plan for management and appropriate use of peat land in order to protect thisvaluable resource. For that reason, Vietnam Environmental Protection Agency (VEPA) conducted an inventory assessment and survey on peat land use practices in Vietnam to provide basis for policy and management and to share information and experience with other ASEAN countries for collaboration in peat land protection.
