Safeguarding tropical forests – Earth's richest natural capital

July 2014

Over 160 international companies and members of civil society have issued a declaration calling for governments to take meaningful action to halt deforestation

The Global Canopy Programme (GCP), in collaboration with leading associations representing over 160 international companies and members of civil society, have issued a unified and coordinated declaration calling for governments to take meaningful action with regards to halting deforestation at the forthcoming UNFCCC climate negotiations taking place in Lima in December.

In particular, the statement calls for urgent progress on creating a strong policy signal for ambitious reduction targets that include REDD+, and in addition, the creation of interim incentives which would help to stimulate and support private sector REDD+ investment during the critical 2015-2020 period - helping to bridge the significant supply and demand gap which currently exists.

Signatories to the declaration include: Climate Markets and Investment Association (CMIA), Code REDD, Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), Global Canopy Programme (GCP), International Emissions Trading Association (IETA) and Platform Biodiversity, Ecosystems and Economy (PBEE).

The latest signatories to the declaration include Fauna & Flora International (FFI) and the Amazon Environmental Research Institute (IPAM).

BLOG: Harnessing indigenous and forest community knowledge to tackle deforestation

An estimated 23% of forest is under the ownership of, or designated for, forest communities and indigenous peoples in the tropics, but this subject remains vastly understudied due to the economic and political marginalisation of forest communities, with customary tenure often not recognised.

GCP’s Forest COMPASS project works with the people who have lived in and managed forests for thousands of years - indigenous peoples and forest communities. The aim of this project is to make international and national initiatives on forests, such as REDD+, more transparent and equitable by scaling up the adoption of forest community collected information within these initiatives. This will draw on lessons from citizen science, which has harnessed technology such as smartphones to increase the impact of community collected information.

Latest update from the REDD desk

New tools available on the REDD desk | Markets and Standards for REDD+: The REDD desk’s Markets and Standards platform includes information on 18 standards, their background and history and their treatment of key REDD+ design features such as leakage and additionality. We also offer users the possibility to compare how the different standards deal with each issue. See the following links for more information: leakage, permanence, additionality, reference levels, social, environmental and procedural measures and requirements.

Interactive REDD+ supply and demand graph: The Global Canopy Programme and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) funded Forest Carbon Markets and Communities (FCMC) Program are happy to announce the launch of an interactive REDD+ supply and demand graph on the REDD desk. The graph allows users to generate and compare estimates of supply and demand for REDD+ credits up to 2020.

The graph was built with data from a March 2013 report prepared by Terra Global Capital for the FCMC Program, which assessed the policies and early REDD+ actions that represent the current status of market and results-based finance mechanisms for REDD+ around the world.

New analysis: The REDD desk now includes a description of the Gold Standard’s 2013 Land Use and Forest Framework and of Plan Vivo’s updated 2013 Standard.

Latest country update on the REDD Desk | Cameroon: Cameroon has been engaged in REDD+ since 2005. In February 2013, the country’s R-PP was approved by the World Bank’s Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF). Cameroon’s R-PP proposes to develop legislation on a range of topics, including stakeholder engagement, carbon rights, and the distribution of benefits from REDD+ programmes. Numerous legislative reforms underway demonstrate the slow pace of law-making processes in Cameroon. To read more, see Cameroon on the REDD Desk.
