General duties and responsibilities:
1. Participate in the overall management and coordination of GCS REDD+ (50%).
The Scientist will be involved in the general management and coordination of GCS REDD+. Tasks include:
• Helping to guide the scientific process and products through participation in the Research Design and Editorial Committee;
• Liaising with research partners, project proponents and donors;
• Helping organise major events, such as workshops and conferences;
• Being responsible for global analysis, reports, and scientific writings, specifically on suitability of proponent interventions, land use land cover change at REDD+ project sites, sustainable forestry in REDD+ and environmental safeguards; and
• Engaging in outcome mapping to demonstrate the impacts of GCS REDD+.

2. Scientific coordination of the field research on REDD+ project sites in Latin America (40%).
The Scientist will have overall responsibility for the field research in Latin America. Tasks include:
• Coordinating field research activities in Brazil and Peru; and
• Supporting training and work of Field Research Supervisors, enumerators and encoders to assure accuracy, quality and timeliness in the data, analyses, reports and scientific writings.

3. Link to broader CIFOR research initiatives (10%).
The Scientist will make links between the GCS-REDD and other components and cross-cutting themes within the CGIAR Consortium Research Programme on Forests, Trees and Agroforestry.

Requirements:
Education, experience and technical skills:
• PhD in forestry, ecology, geography or a related field, with at least 5 years (post PhD degree if newly PhD) of relevant experience in collaborative research
• Demonstrated research leadership on the effectiveness and/or equitability of REDD+ projects
• Extensive fieldwork experience and supervision of junior scientists
• Experience in project management (including management of large budgets) and partner liaison
• Fluency in English and Portuguese and/or Spanish, with excellent writing skills

• Excellent analytical skills
• Proven leadership skills with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, experienced in working with multicultural and multidisciplinary research teams
• Initiative and capacity to work independently
• An effective team member
• Competency in personal organisation, priority setting and managing multiple tasks
• Values the sharing of information and continuous improvement in a cooperative atmosphere of constructive evaluation and learning

Terms and conditions

• Competitive remuneration in US dollars commensurate with skills and experience
• The appointment will be for a period of two years (including one year probation) with a possibility of extension contingent upon performance, continued relevance of the position and available resources.
• The duty station will be at a CIFOR Office in Latin America, with travel to research sites.
