REVIEW OF REGIONAL HAZE SITUATION IN ASEAN REGION (January 2022)

In January 2022, the northern ASEAN region experiences traditional dry season. The southern ASEAN region, especially Peninsular Malaysia, was drier and occasionally windy as the region entered the dry phase of the Northeast Monsoon in late January.

As it is the traditional dry season over the northern ASEAN region, intensified hotspots and smoke haze situation were observed over the Mekong sub-region. In January 2022, the overall hotspot activities started to increase compared to December 2021. The hotspots count for the Mekong sub-region were mostly lower compared to previous years, while the hotspots count over the southern ASEAN region were generally higher to those in previous years.
