REVIEW OF REGIONAL HAZE SITUATION IN ASEAN REGION (April 2022)
Inter-monsoon period prevailed in May with wet weather conditions observed in many parts of the ASEAN region. The inter-monsoon conditions transitioned into the Southwest Monsoon in June and continues throughout July. This marks the onset of the traditional wet season for the northern ASEAN region. It also signals the start of the traditional dry season for the southern ASEAN region.
In May 2022, the total number of hotspots detected in ASEAN region were lower compared to May last year. However, slightly more hotspots detected in Sumatra and Kalimantan compared to May last year. In comparison to April 2022, the hotspot detected were significantly decreased in northern ASEAN. However the hotspot in southern ASEAN region were comparable to last month.
The hotspot activity is generally subdued under wet weather conditions during the inter-monsoon. However, below-normal rainfall were observed over Peninsular Malaysia as well as northern Sumatra. No transboundary haze observed in May.
